Original photograph taken by Martha Cooper in 1984 whilst a staff photographer for the ‘New Yorker’. This image shows Andres “Kid Fly” Flores, a member of the ‘Fantastic Street Dance Crew’.
This work is the first #replayNYC piece and has been recreated by Ernest on Amsterdam Avenue between 942 and 944 in the Upper West Side, Manhattan NY.
The second wall of the REPLAY project 'You'll be the Kid, i'll be the Mum..' has been completed and can be found in the Bushwick area.
Originally shot in black and white, the image comes straight from the pages of Martha Cooper's Iconic publication 'Street Play'. It shows two kids in 1970's New York playing with an abandoned stroller in the street.
The Photo was one I was excited to reimagine, the visual elements are well suited to my style, right down to the found objects like the stroller. The new wall in similar fashion has a stroller chopped and fixed to the wall mirroring the original charming composition.
The wall was kindly offered to us by the manager of the hair salon who despite her own taste, allowed us to keep the tags and original texture of the wall! Not to mention the free haircut she threw in…
Inspired by “Street Play”, Martha Coopers iconic book documenting street life and urban culture of 70’s & 80’s New York, Ernest Zacharevic presents “Replay”; a series of on-street interventions reimagining the original photographic compositions on the streets of NYC.
